Greetings from Calcutta! 🙏 We were headed to Moonbeam Farmstay in October end but decided to defer after the dam-burst and flooding in Sikkim. Besides the compromised roads it cast a pall of gloom at the suffering we have brought unto ourselves through the overuse of modern western technology and science at a speed and size we no longer can control. But it was well worth the wait. It was from home to another home, albeit different. Warmth, affectionate care starting with Farden our young host and his family. Every step of the way they were naturally empathetic and accepting and meeting us whereever we were. And I hope they felt it was mutual! 😀 We do wish to meet Farden's teacher parents to congratulate them on bringing up a youngster whose heart is in the right place and both his feet firmly on the ground. I hope n pray more and more youth with access to family land have the grit to not simply walk away into the oblivion of an identity-less city existence from this all important work of holding a healing space for others to experience the everyday life of a small holding farmer tending towards organic natural methods. I have stayed in several communities but nothing prepares one for the next community experience ever! So Moonbeam was fresh as it was so very familiar. The woodsmoke around the rising rotis, the neat cowdung floors, the worn wooden benches all felt familiar, the flowers, the split bamboo fences, the paths... I wish we had a few more days to sink into the quiet the green the rhythm of the community kitchen, coax a song n story out of the amazing Ongden or Saal Daaju who battled a wild tusker boar n relives a story in all it's details and has the strength born of tireless labour with tiny energetic Nimkit bhouju his partner. Bask in the love of the 2 serene aunts who are totally hug-friendly n without language we had so many conversations, tirelessly cutting chopping preparing meal after a lovely meal till our lazy digestion protested! 😁 And the farm tea! Figs ripe n honey sweet And DilliRam ji, Ram bhaiya..creative chef!Full of humour, We found our singing voices!! Thursday is a vegetarian day but not for guests but it synced well with us since we had to maintain it for personal reasons and have you ever had veggie wheat momos. Oh my goodness.. We lost count! Little dappled Dhenu with her aunts n mother lived underneath our spacious pretty rooms which were beautifully muralled by an artist- lama in vivid reds golds whites blues and the ceiling of our smokily patterned put our minds and eyes into the much needed rest . Our view was resplendent so was the deck with its low furniture where family kept calling in! No one is a stranger, everyone is known and familiar and so were we had started becoming a part of the family. I wish we could fit in more time exploring the land and the river. There are stories and surprises in every person or object in a well lived life but it takes time . From the 100 year old house of Choti Phuphu with pictures of her parents, her treadle sewing machine which needs repair, the vigilant dogs n cats and Kali's kittens also intergenerational had their stories! Scrupulously n paitiently, Arunavh of Muhaan helped us plan this sudden decision n transformed into an unforgettable trip to Tunglabong, Nim basti. A big thanks to Vinod of Journeys With Meaning who works suggested Ma and I get in touch with Arunavh. We- me and my mother, Anjali, who turned 80 this June! We were brought here by Temba, a few inevitable stops in between created probably the only challenge for my mother, the walk down from the main road to the property near sundown. However much we were mentally prepared for the walk through the village, Ma needed a few pit stops where neighbours n relatives provided us water n chairs to rest in! We were well prepared for the exit vide a shorter route, a pickup truck took us partially down to Temba's waiting car armed with flowers gifted and bought. Our tryst with the village farm was over in 3 short days. We hope to be back. 😍

If you want to be close to nature this is the place to be at. The farm has fully organic grown vegetables, I got to harvest some tomatoes too, something which I had never done before. Comfortable rooms to stay at and good food what else do you want....
